“A spiritual director is one who helps another to recognize and to follow the inspirations of grace in his life, in order to arrive at the end to which God is leading him.”
—Thomas Merton
Spiritual direction at its core is loving people and walking beside them...
It is walking alongside someone where they are right now, being a companion in that sacred journey. The Spirit is the one who is guiding the session, my role as spiritual care provider is to come beside you as a witness to what the Spirit is doing, and to help untangle areas that may be keeping you from a deeper connection with the Divine. There is a link to dreams and desires and the things we deeply feel about, connections that were sewn into us from the beginning. Holding space for someone who is seeking those deeper places is a joy and privilege.
Have you walked a labyrinth? Our spiritual journey is quite like stepping onto a path that as we walk, we may see where we are heading, what the goal may be, and yet in the process of moving towards that, we may find ourselves in quite another place, not sure how long it will take to reach our intended place. That is where the beauty of spiritual direction shines. There are ways to walk this path together and be able to touch upon sacred places to see the near and far without feeling we are off the mark, that this is just part of the process.
